Science Discussion Group Guidelines

Science Discussion Group Guidelines

Good discussions result from an organized approach that both includes and excludes certain elements and controls that help guide their freedom.

Include:
·       A committed discussion leader for every session
·       Preparation by all for the discussion, especially by the topic leader
·       Goal of the discussion explained
·       Use topics of general interest
·       Meet the needs of the group
·       Avoid domination by anyone including leader; rein-in dominators; defuse axe-grinders
·       Make sure everyone has a chance to participate; no one is ignored
·       Encourage but also control discussion flow
·       You get out what you put in
·       Vary the stimuli; readings, visuals, orals
·       End with prep for the next meeting
·       Minimize “Uncle Charlie” stories

Beware of:
·       Trying to change people’s feelings
·       Being so open-minded that your brains fall out
Discussion Leaders should explain all assumptions, if any, up front.
Document the topics discussed for a short newsletter paragraph to encourage further participation.
